Rey Mysterio pulls out of NJPW Strong Style Evolved, the latest on his WWE status

Mysterio shocked us all when he appeared at the Royal Rumble and quickly became a trending topic on social media.

Then Rey Mysterio popped up on New Japan’s television and shocked us all yet again when he challenged Jushin “Thunder” Liger to a match at their Strong Style Evolved event in Long Beach. It would be a great match for sure pitting two legends of the ring together for the first time on a big stage since WCW Starrcade in 1996.

But then Mysterio came down with an injury at an indie show and although reports were it wasn’t as bad as some feared, it was still an issue. Rey Mysterio was also talking to WWE at the same time about coming back and it was rumored a meeting with Triple H was on the way.

Mr. 6-1-9 still had a few dates to get through including the New Japan event in Long Beach before a WWE return could really be considered. But as it turns out, he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore because Mysterio was pulled from the show.

“Real quick on Rey,” Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio. “Rey is going to Birmingham this week to get checked out so I would say — you know we talked about Rey doing his negotiations with WWE. So the fact that he’s going to the WWE doctors to get checked out pretty much says that look they’re in negotiations it’s very serious. I guess we’ve already known that since the Royal Rumble anyway you know that it was inevitable but it’s another sign you know that he’s pretty close to making a deal with them. But they wanna check out his arm and everything like that so he’s going in.”

Now it looks like Mysterio is closer to WWE than ever but his cancellation of the New Japan event really makes for curious timing. We’ll have to wait and see, but it might not be too surprising to see Mysterio shock the world yet again with a return to WWE television soon enough.
