Ahead of Drew McIntyre’s big match, there has been some speculation on whether he has signed a new deal with WWE.
Earlier this year, McIntyre took a hiatus from WWE after WrestleMania 39, which was at a time when he was reportedly frustrated with creative and the talks for a new WWE deal that expires next year. He returned at Money in the Bank.
McIntyre will challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title at next Saturday’s Crown Jewel PLE.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed McIntyre’s contract status.
Alvarez: “So, is there anything new on Drew McIntyre? Is he re-signed? Do we know?”
Meltzer: “I could check, but I do not believe he’s re-signed.”
Alvarez: “Because this is a pretty damn big match for a guy who has not re-signed.”
Meltzer: “Oh no, they were gonna push him. He’s solid through April. There’s time. You can do whatever you want with him through April. So the deal is that his contract was to expire at the end of the year, but because of all the injury time accrued, it’s April. So I mean, they’re not at a point where I would say it’s dangerous or we are at a turning point or don’t put the title on him, which they’ve done before. They’ve had champions, Bret Hart, Jeff Jarrett, where guy’s contracts were up.”
Alvarez: “Yeah. But you’re talking about things in the 90s. It’s 2023 now.”
Meltzer: “Yeah. But they’ve done it before.”
Alvarez: “Well, sure. But you know Vince is out of there. And I don’t think Hunter’s putting the title on somebody whose contract…”
Meltzer: “I don’t either, I don’t either. But the point is he’s got plenty of time. It’s not like it’s not like you can’t have him win because he’s going to be gone in a month and he hasn’t resigned his deal. And it’s basically a numbers game. It’s not like he’s a guy who’s looking to leave. It’s just a numbers game. I mean, he wants a certain number and they did not offer that certain number. And they may be in the middle, and they may not meet in the middle. And he may go home, I don’t know, or he may go. Of course, you can go if it’s anything’s possible.”
