Backstage news on long-term WWE plans for Ronda Rousey

During a conversation between Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio, Alvarez asked what WWE is doing with Ronda Rousey and if the idea is that she’s a heel because at the shows, she is seen as a babyface by the fans.

“No the idea is to get her to be a heel,” Meltzer said. “The idea is to get her to be a heel. Here’s the thing. The idea for Ronda Rousey actually is to get her to be what she was before which is to break out of the pack, mainline woman Superstar. Not just a woman on the roster who is below [Bianca] Belair and all that, which she kind of was becoming.”

Meltzer said that the Google Trend numbers this year for Rousey are below Belair and WWE is working to elevate Rousey to the status she had a couple of years ago.

Meltzer continued, “They want to get her back to ‘special attraction, big Brock Lesnar star.’ So that’s the goal of what they’re doing right now. The belief was that at the end, because she’s Liv Morgan, [Ronda] ends up as a heel. What they’re doing now isn’t necessarily to make her a heel, it’s to make her a big big star. If she ends up being a babyface from this, that’s fine too.”

Meltzer said that a year ago the idea was Becky Lynch for Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 39 but plans could still change depending on crowd reactions.

As seen in the video below from Friday night SmackDown, Adam Pearce basically played the Mr. McMahon heel role in a segment with Rousey. The segment ended with Pearce insulting her and as a result, she put him in the armbar submission.
