AEW will pay tribute to the late Dennis Condrey when AEW Collision returns to Huntsville, Alabama, on May 30, with Tony Khan personally confirming the honor in an interview with WAAY-31 Sports.
Asked by WAAY-31’s sports team whether AEW would honor Condrey when the company comes to Huntsville, Khan responded with one word. “Absolutely.”
He went on to express his fandom of Condrey and the Midnight Express, the tag team Condrey co-founded that became one of the most influential heel acts in the 1980s.
AEW Collision will air live from the Von Braun Center in Huntsville on Saturday, May 30. The venue is roughly 70 miles from Florence, Alabama, where Condrey was born and raised, and the show falls within driving range of much of the territory where Condrey built his career across Continental Championship Wrestling, Mid-South, and Jim Crockett Promotions in the 1980s.
Condrey died in March of this year at age 76. Per longtime confidant Jim Cornette, who managed the original Midnight Express team of Condrey and Bobby Eaton through the team’s most prominent run, Condrey suffered a major fall inside his home that broke his neck. He was alone at the time and did not survive the injuries.
The original Midnight Express began with Condrey and Randy Rose under Cornette’s management in Continental and continued with Condrey and Bobby Eaton as the more famous version after Cornette signed with Jim Crockett Promotions. The Condrey-Eaton-Cornette trio is considered one of the greatest heel tag team acts of the 1980s and ran extended programs with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, the Road Warriors, and the Fantastics across the period. Both Bobby Eaton and Cornette would later add Stan Lane as Condrey’s replacement after Condrey’s first departure from Crockett.
Condrey held the NWA World Tag Team Championships in multiple territories and was widely respected throughout the industry, with Jim Cornette publicly eulogizing him in March as one of the most underrated workers of his generation.
AEW Collision airs Saturday, May 30 at 8 PM ET on TNT and HBO Max.
