AEW has set the stage for a World Championship showdown, and it turns out the company has been building to it for quite some time.
On the July 1 episode of Dynamite, AEW announced that MJF will defend the AEW World Championship against Kenny Omega at next week’s Beach Break edition of the show. The bout carries a career-altering stipulation: if Omega loses, he will never be allowed to challenge for the title again.
While the match was just made official, new details indicate it has been in the pipeline for months. According to Fightful Select, MJF vs. Omega was originally slated for the AEW Redemption 2026 pay-per-view before AEW made a late decision to move the match up to Dynamite.
Fightful Select added further context, reporting that AEW’s plans for the title match have been “in effect” for over three months “at the very least.” The groundwork dates back to AEW Dynasty 2026, when MJF cheated his way to victory over Omega in the main event, capturing the AEW World Championship.
The fallout from that match played out over later weeks, with a series of promos and interactions involving MJF, Omega, Will Ospreay, and other key players in the title picture.
