AEW has already shown that not all of its wrestlers are simply a heel or babyface. Instead, some wrestlers are in the middle and mostly portray themselves with the volume turned up several notches.

Cody Rhodes, who is the current AEW TNT Champion, responded on social media to a comment from former WWE star Disco Inferno.

Inferno was asking on Twitter whether Rhodes is a face or a heel in AEW.

“Is Cody Rhodes a heel? This is like the old school angle where you have a list of worthy contenders and they are just a bunch of indy workers that don't even work for the company. #warhorse.”

Rhodes responded and noted that he’s neither a babyface or a heel.

“I’m neither. I’m a competitor & a reigning champion. Tired old tropes are even more insulting to the viewer considering I’ve been on their TV since I was 20. It ain’t black and white, it hasn’t been in forever. Circumstances of the match dictate who we cheer for, beautiful thing.”

AEW recently announced that Rhodes will make his next title defense as TNT Champion against Warhorse on this Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite.
