Impact Wrestling is working hard to get fans to sample their show again. If you’ve been watching in recent weeks, you probably have noticed some of the changes. They have removed the authority figure and they are focusing more on in-ring action. They have also made changes to the broadcast team. For now, the Impact Wrestling announcing team will be Josh Mathews and Sonjay Dutt. That could change by the time they get to the next set of tapings. Dutt is wearing different hats because he is also in charge of talent relations and he writes the show. He’s actually pretty good at the announce table and it probably helps that he knows where the storylines are going so he is able to call attention to key moments that will pay off weeks or months later.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that there were plans for Don Callis to announce even though he stated that he wanted to stay off television. The plan was to move Mathews to running social media and becoming the manager for Matt Sydal. Mathews kept the spot because Jeremy Borash left the company.
Meltzer reported that Mike Tenay was under consideration but Tenay is pretty much done and feels like he is now retired from wrestling. Up until 2016, Tenay had been hosting a sports betting podcast on CBS Radio.
The company sent out the following tweet:
“Redemption isn’t just the name of our next PPV, its a mission statement. We’re not asking for redemption, we plan to earn it – little by little every week. Jump on board now because we’re creating something special. Thanks for watching, we’ll see you next week. #IMPACTonPop”
