Backstage news on when WWE decided to have Roman Reigns retain Undisputed Universal Title at WrestleMania 39

In the main event of WWE WrestleMania 39 on Sunday, Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes to retain the Undisputed Universal Title. It was a shocking finish to many fans.

The match saw outside interference from The Usos, Paul Heyman, and Solo Sikoa. The finish saw Rhodes hit two Cross Rhodes before Paul Heyman distracted the referee, allowing Sikoa to hit Rhodes with the samoan spike to Rhodes and Reigns connected with a spear for the win.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported today that when Vince McMahon was still in power of creative before he retired last summer, there were no plans for Reigns to lose the title. Once he was out of power, the company put plans in place for Rhodes to challenge Reigns for it.

Several people in WWE began to defend the idea of Reigns retaining the title over the last week, and there started to be rumblings that Reigns may come out on top.

“Now, we’ve confirmed that the plan for Reigns to emerge victorious was set and several people were aware of it several weeks ago. We’re not told when the talent were informed,” the report noted.

Fightful did confirm that the interference elements weren’t told to talent, referees, and ringside staff until told. Sources denied McMahon was involved in making the call to have Reigns retain.
