Big Japanese name turns down ROH in hopes of eventual WWE contract

There are probably more opportunities than ever in the world of pro wrestling. ROH’s announcement that they will crown their first Women Of Honor champion brought a lot of emphasis to women’s wrestling in ROH and opened up plenty of doors. But it turns out one of the world’s top female wrestlers declined ROH’s offer in hopes of securing a WWE contract.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Io Shirai isn’t in the WOH Championship Tournament because she is still holding out to be eventually cleared by WWE doctors so she can sign with Vince McMahon and Company. Therefore, it is reported that she feared working for ROH would hurt her chances so she decided not to participate.

The 27-year-old Japanese star had a WWE tryout last Summer and it went well. It was reported in June 2017 that WWE and Shirai were about to sign a contract which would see her possibly come into NXT, but a neck injury was discovered which would delay Shirai’s WWE debut. As reports came out saying she was medically cleared the contract offer was rescinded by WWE noting their rule of not wanting to bring in talent who already have concussions or neck issues.

Therefore at least Io Shirai is still thinking a WWE contract could a possibility.
