Chad Gable says he made a promise on WWE television that he has not kept, and it is bothering him.
Asked by Cody Rhodes on What Do You Wanna Talk About what the next mountain is, Gable named it without much preamble.
“Without being a total cliche, I think I need to win a singles championship at this point for myself and just for my legacy in order to take the next step. You listed off some of my achievements at the beginning, and they’re all tag team stuff, which is great, and I have fond memories of it all, but where’s the singles stuff?”
The reason runs deeper than the record.
“I need to convince myself that I am what I have said I am. There’s a big part of that for me. There’s a conviction there. I’m a big guy about, if I put something out in the universe, I have to deliver. I think that’s something that’s been a strength of mine and served me well my whole life, whether it was for amateur championships or just even getting to WWE.”
“This is one that I haven’t done yet. I haven’t made happen, and I’ve said it, so it’s weighing on me. And I think that’s the next step.”
Rhodes suggested the Intercontinental Championship as the likeliest target given Gable is on Raw. Gable agreed, and then remembered something that has been raised with him recently.
“To that point, I was reminded just recently that I said on TV once, I swear to God, I’m winning that championship. And I was taught from a young age, you don’t swear to God something unless you’re going to do it. And that one hit me hard. It’s like, you swore to God you were going to win that Intercontinental Championship, so I better do it.”
Gable’s championships to date are the NXT Tag Team Championship and the Raw Tag Team Championship, both won with Jason Jordan as American Alpha, along with tag team gold with Bobby Roode and with Otis.
Rhodes closed the segment by predicting Gable would win more than one singles championship before his career is over.
