Drew McIntyre is not expected back in WWE anytime soon, and the former WWE Champion has added another Hollywood project to his slate. According to a report from PWInsider’s Mike Johnson, there is nothing on the table for McIntyre creatively in WWE, and online reports suggesting he was set for a return leading into SummerSlam were inaccurate.
Per the report, McIntyre has been circling several Hollywood projects since returning from filming the Highlander reboot in Scotland. That activity has now produced a new role.
Deadline reported that McIntyre has joined the cast of The Last Druid, a historical action drama starring Russell Crowe that is filming in Spain this summer. Per Deadline, the film marks a reunion of sorts, as McIntyre recently worked with Crowe on Amazon MGM’s Highlander reboot, and the two projects represent his first forays into sizeable movies.
According to Deadline, The Last Druid will see Crowe do battle with the Roman Empire a quarter century after Gladiator. The story follows a Roman Emperor who discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia, forcing a peaceful Celtic elder, played by Crowe, to take up arms to protect his family and people from annihilation. There is no word yet on McIntyre’s role.
The film’s cast also includes Stacy Clausen, star of the Sundance breakout Leviticus, Spanish veteran Pablo Derqui, and Crowe’s son, Tennyson Crowe, in his second acting role, with Rose Leslie, Andreas Pietschmann, and Daniel Zovatto also attached, per Deadline. William Eubank is directing from a script he co-wrote with Phil Gawthorne and Carlyle Eubank.
McIntyre has been off WWE television for an extended stretch. The reporting on his absence has connected it to his film commitments, and the new PWInsider report indicates there is no immediate creative direction in place for him, pushing back on rumors of a SummerSlam return.
