Former WCW/WWE/TNA star Eric Bischoff recently spoke about the WWE Cruiserweight Division and the brand split on episode 23 of his podcast, Bischoff on Wrestling. On the topic of how today’s WWE Cruiserweight Division compares to the WCW Cruiserweight Division, he said that it’s hard to make a comparison because WCW did it first and that something can never be first again because everything else is judged against it. He noted that WWE’s division doesn’t quite feel as significant because they don’t make it feel quite as significant.
When asked about the WWE brand extension, he stated that when he thinks of a brand split he thinks of the drama and the competition that should go on between the two, not just two separate shows and rosters. “The competition between WCW and WWE was so intense. You’re never going to be able to recreate that in today’s world. I would love to see elements of that competitiveness between the two.” He stated that he wants the drama in the aspect of which Superstar is going to jump brands and who puts on the best show from week to week. He thinks that is what elevated pro wrestling in the late-90’s.
