Gunther Reveals When Triple H Approached Him About Goldberg Retirement Match

Gunther has revealed that Triple H approached him about facing Bill Goldberg in his retirement match nearly a year before it actually took place.

Speaking on WWE Retrospective, Gunther recalled the conversation that started the ball rolling on what would become the culmination of Goldberg’s in-ring career at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, 2025.

“Hunter was asking me about it almost a year before, ‘Do you want to do that?’ ‘Yeah. I want to wrestle Bill Goldberg and I want to have the best match he maybe has ever had.’ In that situation, the only thing I can do is give it my best and make sure it’s the best match possible,” Gunther said.

Goldberg and Gunther first teased a potential program with an angle at WWE Bad Blood 2024, with Goldberg formally announcing his retirement match would take place on November 2, 2024. The match ultimately landed at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, 2025, where Gunther emerged victorious.

The win over Goldberg was the first in what became Gunther’s “Career Killer” run, which has since also seen him end the in-ring careers of John Cena and AJ Styles.

Gunther faces Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42 night one on April 18 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
