Sean Waltman thought Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi would have gotten the same match out of each other at SummerSlam without the Hell in a Cell around them.
Femi beat Lesnar inside the structure in the main event of night one on Saturday in Minneapolis, closing the show with Fall From Grace after kicking out of a tombstone onto the exposed wood beneath the ring.
Speaking to Sam Roberts on WWE Now, Waltman said the stipulation was not what carried it.
“Honestly I don’t think they even needed the Hell in a Cell.”
He was clear that this was not a knock on the match, and that the cage still added something.
“They could have gotten everything, the same stuff done, same emotions all that. But Hell in a Cell is an extra bonus.”
The two used a table, chairs, the steel steps and the ring mat, and the cell itself went largely unused, with neither man climbing it. It was the first Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam since 2008.
The stipulation came from Lesnar. Femi gave up the guaranteed world championship match he had earned by winning King of the Ring in order to challenge him, and Lesnar accepted on the condition that it took place inside the cell.
Waltman took on the objection that the whole thing was written for Lesnar to say.
“I don’t care what anybody says. I know people can say ‘They write this or write that.’ But I don’t think anybody can tell Brock Lesnar that he’s got to say this guy’s the future if Brock Lesnar doesn’t believe that.”
Waltman watched the show from ringside in Minneapolis, seated with Jimmy Hart and among a group that also included Mark Henry and Dan Spivey.
