More WWE releases may be coming on the heels of last weekend’s roster cuts, according to Bryan Alvarez on Monday’s Wrestling Observer Live.
“Ever since Friday’s show, we had more people released from WWE. There may be more coming,” Alvarez said. “In fact, a few of the people that were announced this weekend had actually been released a while ago, and it just wasn’t announced until this weekend, so I believe there might be others as well.”
Alvarez flagged several WWE SmackDown names as ones he’d be worried about: “I would not be surprised if there were more names to come,” he said. The May 1 SmackDown ended with Jacob Fatu locking the Tongan Death Grip on Solo Sikoa and Talla Tonga before putting Talla through the announce desk, and television commentary referred to the entire MFT faction being wiped out, not just the two members officially released that weekend.
Tama Tonga’s situation is unclear. Alvarez said he was told Friday night that Tonga had been released, then Tonga’s name was not on Saturday’s official list. “I was told that Tama Tonga was gone. Turns out, he wasn’t released the next day. I don’t know what that means.”
Alvarez also referenced Shinsuke Nakamura, who has been rumored multiple times to be on his way out, remains technically employed, and has not been on television in months.
The confirmed weekend releases were The New Day’s Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods (this was a mutual departure) along with MFT members Tonga Loa and JC Mateo (Jeff Cobb). Those follow the previous wave of releases announced the prior weekend as part of the post-WrestleMania 42 reset.
