Trick Williams is the WWE United States Champion again, and Lil Yachty is the reason.
Yachty and Baron Corbin opened the stipulation on the Sunday Night’s Main Event card at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. If the rapper lasted five minutes with the champion, Williams got a title match later in the night. He lasted, and Williams won the belt.
Corbin offered Yachty a chance to walk before the bell. Yachty answered by hitting him with the microphone. He then tried to run, and Corbin caught him and beat him down at ringside. Yachty got in a few shots with the Trick Stick, and Corbin made him pay for them and took out some of the rapper’s entourage on the way. Yachty landed a few strikes and a crossbody for two.
Corbin caught him with End of Days, punched him several times rather than covering, and hit a second End of Days. He set up a table and went to put Yachty through it, and Yachty hit him with a low blow. The five minutes expired. Corbin put him through the table anyway.
Williams had his match, and it happened straight away.
Trick caught Corbin with a series of shots and the two went back and forth before Corbin sent him flying off the apron onto the announce table. Corbin got two with Deep Six. Yachty distracted him from ringside and Williams hit a big boot for two. Corbin hit Williams with the championship for a two count of his own. Williams hit the Trick Shot and won it.
Winner and new WWE United States Champion: Trick Williams
The finish reversed the one that took the title off him. Corbin came back to SmackDown in early July by breaking up Williams’ defence against Carmelo Hayes and hitting both men with End of Days. He won the championship from Williams by cracking him with the belt while the referee was turned away, which is the same spot he went to on Sunday and could not finish with this time.
Yachty has been in it throughout. Corbin put him through a table at SummerSlam. After Corbin retained against Hayes on SmackDown, Yachty attacked the champion with the Trick Stick and Williams hit the Trick Shot behind it. Corbin proposed the five-minute match himself after another altercation the following week, which makes the result the second time in a row that going after Yachty has cost him.
The stipulation was Corbin’s own idea, which is the part that will follow him out of Atlanta. He did not have to put the championship on the line at all on Sunday. He offered a five-minute match against a rapper as a way of humiliating him, could not finish inside the time, and lost the title in the match it created.
Williams goes into the autumn with the title back and no announced challenger. Corbin held it for roughly six weeks.
