The WWE Universal Championship was defended at the 30th edition of WWE SummerSlam. The title was on the line in a match involving Brock Lesnar, Samoa Joe, Roman Reigns, and Braun Strowman. When Reigns made his entrance, Michael Cole made it a point to say that Reigns defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania and he “MAY HAVE retired The Deadman.” As we’ve noted on the site, the announcers have been told to never outright say that Taker is retired. The only person that can claim that Taker is retired is Reigns but the announcers always say “MAY HAVE” or he “MIGHT HAVE” been retired.
So, here is a recap of some of the key moments in the match…and there were plenty:
So much happened during the opening minutes of the match and the crowd went nuts for all of it. Stowman and Lesnar faced off, Reigns speared Lesnar through the barricade and Strowman put Joe and Reigns through the announcer’s table. Strowman then did a running powerbomb through one of the announcer’s table. Strowman might just be the biggest babyface in WWE. Strowman also tossed a chair into Joe’s face. Strowman then did ANOTHER running powerbomb on Lesnar through another announcer’s table as fans chanted for Strowman. Referees ran down to ringside to check on Lesnar. Strowman then picked up the last announcer’s table and dropped it on Lesnar. Lesnar was put on a stretcher and was taken away from the ringside area.
As Lesnar was taken away, Strowman got back to work and attacked Joe and Reigns with the steel steps. Strowman was cut open on the side of his head as the action finally settled back in the ring. Lesnar walked back to the ring from the backstage area while officials pleaded with him not to go back in. Lesnar took out Reigns and then hit suplexes on Joe and Reigns. The end of the match was Reigns attempting a spear or a superman punch but Lesnar surprised him and hit the F5 and pinned him clean.
