WWE cancels planned 205 Live California shows

Last month, WWE ran their first 205 Live (live event) shows. The idea was to run in the northeast because there are more hardcore fans in that part of the country. Well, the shows were hot and the fans were into everything but apparently, it doesn’t make sense financially to go forward with more shows…at least not in the immediate future.

WWE has scrapped plans to tour in California. Aside from the TV after Smackdown, there are no live events scheduled for 205 Live this month. However, according to Dave Meltzer on Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, there is talk of doing shows in the future. One of the reasons why they decided wanted to tour is because they thought that Enzo Amore was a big star that could draw for the shows in the northeast last month. Ticket sales weren’t great so they ended up adding Nia Jax as a special referee and Matt Hardy vs. Bray Wyatt.  The attendance for those shows was ok but apparently, it wasn’t good enough to run more shows in California.

On last week’s 205 Live, Daniel Bryan said that the show would go back to being more about in-ring action so perhaps, this will be the start of a new direction for the brand. The big criticism of the brand is that it is nothing like the Cruiserweight Classic show that fans raved about. The CWC featured awesome matches in an intimate setting (Full Sail University) and most of the wrestlers came off as big-time stars. 205 Live has failed because the fans are there to see Smackdown Live and the wrestlers have been put in goofy storylines. Hopefully, change is coming.
