John Cena and The Undertaker are apparently going to have a match at WrestleMania even though The Dead Man has remained totally silent during the entire build toward the match.
Instead, Cena went off on Taker in a humanizing way talking about his ego while inciting the crowd to chant “do something” in a series of weekly promos. We haven’t seen The Undertaker since his awkward promo at Raw 25 and there could be an interesting reason why Vince McMahon has decided to wait so long to have him reemerge.
Dave Meltzer recently discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio how Cena and Taker’s situation is interesting because it’s totally different than what WWE did with Daniel Bryan.
“They had Danielson have his checkup by Dr. Maroon 8 days earlier because Vince was so adamant that he didn’t want to wait until what would have been this week to shoot the angle [with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn] and then next week have the match which I can get.”
“But with Undertaker and Cena [Vince McMahon] is actually doing the exact same thing. To me, the idea is with the Daniel Bryan return and Ronda Rousey’s match you know Nakamura and AJ and Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns I think maybe he just figures, ‘hey it’s a loaded up card we can wait until the last week to push the Cena and Undertaker thing.'”
Even though it’s interesting how they’ve built this match at WrestleMania and we have a number of new John Cena memes because of it, this might be a strange booking decision. WrestleMania 34 is a stacked card and might be the biggest of all time, but John Cena vs The Undertaker would have made it so much better.
If/when the match goes down it will still be exciting but imagine how much better it could have been if we had weeks of buildup between the two to create a feud rather than a string of John Cena promos begging for someone who isn’t in the building to show up.
