SummerSlam was a show we won’t soon forget. The Biggest Party Of The Summer was full of plenty of surprises and one of those was how easily John Cena defeated Baron Corbin.
The two had a pretty good match as John fought to maintain control and Baron found every reason he could to yell at the crowd. The Barclays Center was chanting “where’s your briefcase?” at The Lone Wolf which is better than what they chanted at him during the NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III kickoff show which was simply: “you f-cked up.”
The fact is even though Corbin might have some people who believe in him and see promise in the young multi-sport crossover athlete he might have damaged his reputation backstage. “Yeah, [Baron Corbin’s] definitely being punished there’s not even a question now” Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer said he expected John Cena to win the match against Corbin but “I didn’t expect him to lose that kind of a match. This was a match where you’re an afterthought.” Baron Corbin didn’t even get to kick out of an AA leaving many to wonder what is next for SmackDown Live’s resident metal head.
“It was just like, ‘you’re an afterthought buddy, you’re not in our plans… you’re just a guy.’ And if they call up Bobby Roode and put him on SmackDown that might be the spot that he gets” Meltzer concluded.
So there might be a silver lining if you’re a Bobby Roode fan because he could be moved into Baron’s vacant spot on the top of the roster. But don’t count The Lone Wolf out just yet because there’s plenty of time for him to make it back on top sooner or later.
