If you were wondering why WWE brought back so many women from the past for the women’s Royal Rumble match, it is partially due to a documentary.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that there were more women from the past than originally planned because of an upcoming documentary on women’s wrestling. Meltzer also noted that the women on the roster are going to get a mega push (more than before) because their biggest mainstream star is a woman. His exact quote was, “They are going to heavily push women, even more so than before, since at least right now the company’s biggest mainstream star is a woman.”
Also, this was not mentioned by Dave Meltzer, but I’ve heard that the reason why Nikki Bella eliminated Brie Bella is because that will play into a storyline on Total Divas. E! cameras were also filming material backstage before and during the women’s Rumble match. Nikki and Brie have been training for the past couple of months and had talked about wanting to return to the ring together.
The Rousey deal was a great move by WWE, aside from the obvious reasons to do it. This should help with their TV negotiations because they can now tell TV networks that they will get Rousey on their network and that should, in theory, cause networks to bid more for WWE’s TV shows.
