One of the craziest experiences you can have as a wrestling fan is witnessing one of John Cena’s entrances live and not making a sound. People all around you will cheer while others will yell the worst stuff you could think of. What did he do to deserve all that hate? He’s John Cena! The guy goes around doing Make-A-Wishes like they’re going out of style and he takes that job seriously.
John is one of the only people we can think of who can hold himself back from sobbing while still giving an impassioned impromptu speech.
Bleacher Report recently got ahold of Super Cena where he discussed some of the polarizing aspects of the current WWE fan base. Apparently, bullying never goes away no matter who you are. But when asked how often he gets his feelings hurt by fans his reply was simple: “Every day.”
“I can only imagine being a young person who’s bullied” Cena continued. “I remember back to my days as a teenager. When you get your feelings hurt, you feel that moment of embarrassment. You think: ‘No one wants to talk to me ever again. It’s all over.’ I reassure people that’s totally not the case. These [bullies] are just hateful people doing hateful things. Sometimes, it’s a lesson in tough love, but you keep positive, smile in the face of hateful adversity and move on. It makes you a stronger person.”
“I’ve always taken any sort of audible response as a compliment, and I always understand it is our consumers’ right and privilege to say whatever they want at our events. So as long as there’s no silence, I’ll keep being excited. But that stuff in the arenas is one thing. The comments on the internet—the obnoxious, visceral comments—are baffling to me. I just don’t know why that’s the way it is.”
As we look at what John Cena has in line for him next in his career the writing is on the wall he’ll be a big box office draw. He already has millions of fans and his household name is probably going to get even more popular. But it’s almost comforting to know that as big as John’s name might get, the little things still get to him just like with everybody else.
