Triple H sees everything he wants in Bron Breakker. The challenge, he says, is making sure the Steiner name is a starting point rather than a ceiling.
Speaking on the third season of WWE Unreal, the Netflix docuseries that goes inside WWE’s decision-making, WWE’s Chief Content Officer laid out both the gifts and the trap that come with Breakker’s lineage. Breakker, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Rick Steiner and nephew of Scott Steiner, arrived in WWE as one of the most highly touted prospects in years.
“Smart, young, hungry, driven, coachable. Athletically has all the gifts,” Triple H said. “The challenge for Bron is don’t become just the next Steiner. You have an opportunity to be so much more.”
He reached for two of the biggest stars the company has produced to make the point, both of whom came from wrestling families and outgrew them.
“Much like The Rock was so much bigger than Rocky Johnson. Much like Roman Reigns is so much bigger than Sika,” Triple H said. “Those talent didn’t lean on the past. They, in their own way, paid tribute to it while creating their own lane. You really don’t wanna be the next Steiner. You want to be the first Bron Breakker.”
Triple H acknowledged that the expectations he and others place on Breakker can be a burden as much as a compliment.
“One of the things that I hate doing, but it’s sort of inevitable, is when you say like, oh, this guy’s the future. It’s like the kiss of death,” Triple H said. “It’s so hard to measure up to that, but the great ones find a way.”
The comments arrive as Breakker sits near the top of WWE’s card as a two-time Intercontinental Champion aligned with Paul Heyman’s group.
